Rating: Every time we stay at a guesthouse in Japan, we check the map before heading out to see if there are any unique old shops to explore. On the map, the most obvious one is this Sukeroku Udon, which looks like a local old shop. If you have the chance, you should try it.
From Monday to Thursday, we passed by at different times and never saw it open. Finally, on Friday morning before leaving Japan, we found it open. Just as we were discussing whether to try it, a blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty came out after dining and gave us a thumbs up, saying it was delicious. So our group went in! Inside, there were only two very small four-person tables, roughly fitting two adults per table.
After ordering from the elderly man, while waiting for the food, we noticed on the wall that this Sukeroku, founded in Showa 25 (1950), had been featured in newspapers and TV shows long ago. We wondered if it was only open one day a week, but then saw on the wall it’s closed every Wednesday and open from 08:30 to 14:30. The reason we didn’t see it open the previous four days was probably because the short hours didn’t match our passing times.
Kitsune Udon (Inari Udon) 450 JPY
Kitsune udon
The broth is based on bonito and kelp, with soft-textured udon noodles topped with two sweet fried tofu skins. The flavor is very light and refreshing, perfect for breakfast.
Oyakodonburi 800 JPY
A Japanese rice bowl with chicken and egg mixed together, with a slightly sweet taste. The base flavor is a bit salty.
Tanindonburi 800 JPY
Tastes like beef bowl, with a ring of egg liquid poured around the side. The first bite is sweet, with a salty base.
Konoha Donburi 800 JPY
A Japanese rice bowl with sliced shiitake mushrooms and egg mixed in, overall savory flavor.
The overall taste is excellent; personally, I think it’s better than Matsubaya. The prices are very affordable. The elderly man is very friendly to customers. If you want to experience a local Showa era style udon old shop, this is worth a try.
