Osaka Port: The Historical and Modern Hub of Osaka Bay

Osaka Port is located in the northeastern part of Osaka Bay and is one of Japan's major ports. Together with Kobe Port, it forms the "Hanshin Port," serving as a key logistics center in western Japan. The history of Osaka Port dates back to ancient times when it was known as "Naniwazu." Since the Nara period (710-794), it has been a maritime starting point for routes to the Korean Peninsula and China. After opening in 1868, Osaka's industry and trade rapidly developed, and the port's ship traffic increased significantly, making it one of Asia's important trading ports. Osaka Port is divided into three main areas: North Port, Inner Port, and South Port. North Port mainly handles container logistics, the Inner Port houses Tempozan Pier serving international cruise ships, and South Port (Nanko) is a multifunctional docking area for foreign trade vessels and domestic ferries. Around Tempozan Pier, there are tourist attractions such as the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel and the Osaka Aquarium (Kaiyukan). The aquarium features the world's largest whale shark and includes touch pools for close encounters with marine life. The Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel stands 112.5 meters tall, offering panoramic views of Osaka Bay, Kansai International Airport, and the Rokko mountain range. Winters are cold, so wearing a thick coat is recommended. The pier area provides indoor rest areas and restaurants for visitors.

In terms of transportation, Osaka Port is accessible by public transit. The closest subway station to Tempozan Pier is Osakako Station. From downtown Osaka, take the Osaka Metro Chuo Line to Osakako Station; the trip takes about 15 minutes and costs around 230 yen. From there, it’s about a 5-minute walk to the pier. From Kansai International Airport, take the JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service to Osaka Station, which takes about 1 hour and costs around 1,200 yen, then transfer to the Chuo Line to Osakako Station. Alternatively, you can take the airport bus to Tempozan (Kaiyukan) Station, which takes about 1 hour and costs around 1,550 yen. The pier is open year-round, making it a great destination for travelers planning a visit to Osaka.
