📍Osaka Kizu Market
This itinerary is arguably the toughest day of the tour, and it’s not because we’re going to Universal Studios... but because we’re heading to Kizu Market to eat seafood bowls.
This spot has actually been on my bucket list for a long time, but after hearing so many people say that the doors open at 6:00 with long lines and they close once sold out, I had kind of accepted that maybe I’d never get the chance in this lifetime and didn’t want to force it...
So with a 5:00 AM wake-up call and an Uber ride, by 5:45 we were already in line, awake in body but not quite in spirit 😂
The moment the seafood bowl was placed in front of us, we instantly woke up completely, totally blown away by the seafood explosion... Without any spoilers from others’ photos, it was full of surprises, and we couldn’t wait to dig in... Everyone, I’m telling you, if you come to Japan, you really have to try this once. The line for this seafood bowl is totally worth it—fresh and delicious, no exaggeration.
The sea urchin and salmon roe were so generous and satisfying to eat. These two are my favorites, and this time I really indulged... didn’t work hard, just devoted myself to loving everyone.
The salmon, sea urchin, and scallop bowl we ordered was also amazing. The salmon belly had beautiful marbling, smooth and tender with no fishy smell, and the sashimi-grade scallops were delicious too.
The seared scallop bowl was really big and thick, paired with salmon roe, and we finished it all. Also, this place doesn’t use vinegar rice for their bowls; the rice grains are cooked to a super chewy texture, which is a big plus. I think not using vinegar rice actually highlights the fresh and sweet flavors of the seafood even more, making it tastier.
After eating, we wandered around a bit to satisfy our curiosity. Luckily, we were full and satisfied, or else we probably would have bought a bunch to take back to the hostel. The prices at the supermarket are really tempting...
Kizu Market is a local morning market with about 300 years of history. Although it’s been around for a long time, the facilities are well maintained, and the market doesn’t feel dirty or messy. It mainly sells fruits, vegetables, seafood, meat, and dried goods. Kizu Market usually opens at 6 AM and closes around 11 AM, with fixed holidays on Wednesdays and Sundays. It also closes on national holidays!
A special reminder: this place only accepts cash. After eating, we declared bankruptcy on the spot 😂 (mainly because we didn’t bring much cash to begin with).
