Ago Shrine is known as the final resting place of Sanada Yukimura during the Summer Siege of Osaka. It's a popular shrine visited by Sanada fans from far and wide.
During the Summer Siege of Osaka in 1615 (the first year of the Genna era) during the early Edo period, Sanada Yukimura devised a strategy to isolate the Tokugawa forces and marched from Chausuyama, aiming to take Tokugawa Ieyasu's head.
He pushed Tokugawa Ieyasu so far that he was prepared to commit seppuku, but was stopped by reinforcements. He dismounted his horse at Yasui Shrine during his retreat, where he was discovered and killed by his pursuers.
The site features a monument commemorating the death of Sanada Yukimura and a statue of Sanada Yukimura.
The Sanada Pine tree stands nearby.
It's said that Sanada Yukimura met his end leaning against this lone pine tree.
The current pine tree is not the same as it was back then, but appears to be a newly planted second-generation tree.
