"Abikosan Daisho Kannonji Temple," the head temple of the Kannon sect, is Japan's oldest temple dedicated to Kannon Bodhisattva.
Long ago, the family of Yosami no Abiko, who lived here, received a 1.8-inch (approximately 8cm) tall Kannon statue as a gift from King Seong of Baekje, and founded the temple in 546, the 7th year of the reign of Emperor Kinmei.
It is said that Prince Shotoku later received a revelation from Kannon Bodhisattva and built Ahikosan Kannonji Temple.
Built approximately 1,400 years ago, this is Japan's oldest Kannon sacred site.
It was destroyed in a fire in 1881 (Meiji 14) along with many temple treasures, but was subsequently rebuilt in 1890 (Meiji 23).
Emperor Shomu was cured of a serious illness during his unlucky year by praying to the Kannon Bodhisattva, and Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was pursued by Sanada Yukimura during the Summer Siege of Osaka, escaped at this temple. It has long been said to have miraculous powers for warding off evil and for bringing good fortune and granting wishes.
Every year on Setsubun, a traditional goma fire ritual is held at one of Japan's largest goma halls, attracting many visitors.
The temple is often overwhelmed by the sheer number of visitors, but this alone shows how much of a place of refuge it is for so many.
The temple grounds feature an approximately 800-year-old camphor tree and the White Dragon Pond, where large Nishikigoi carp swim.
