Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library, built in 1904, is a stately structure recreating the architectural style of Greek and Roman temples.
It was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1974.
Its massive Corinthian columns and beams are a sight to behold.
The beautifully curved circular dome, stained glass, and grand staircase, immediately visible upon entering, are full of romanticism and moving.
The second floor is also open to the public.
There is also an exhibition room showcasing Osaka products.
The library is located next to Osaka City Hall and is open to the public free of charge.
The library was built in 1904 (Meiji 37) with a donation of the library building and funds for book purchases from the Sumitomo family, which had been based in Osaka since the Edo period and continued its business there.
In 1922 (Taisho 11), the left and right wings were also donated to add to the library (National Important Cultural Property).
Nakanoshima Library houses ancient documents, Osaka-related literature, and business books.
Thanks to its quiet and convenient location, it remains a popular destination for researchers and book lovers, even nearly 100 years after its completion.
