With nine different types of hot spring waters, it is often referred to as the 'Eastern Yokozuna' alongside Beppu in the west. A day trip wouldn't do it justice—take your time to enjoy the variety of baths.
From Naruko Onsen, it's just over an hour by bus to Naruko Gorge, where you can enjoy autumn foliage and hiking. There's nothing better than soaking in a hot spring after a hike!
