Otaru’s Hidden Charms

Otaru may be best known for its romantic canal, but spending a day exploring beyond the usual spots revealed some of the city’s quieter, more breathtaking treasures.

I began at Shinyo-ji Temple, one of the most prominent temples in the city. Its large wooden gates and peaceful courtyard felt worlds away from the bustle of Otaru’s shopping streets. The temple grounds had an atmosphere of calm, with incense drifting through the air and intricate details on the wooden carvings that spoke of history and devotion. Standing there, I could feel how deeply the temple is tied to the city’s cultural roots.

From there, I headed up to an observation point overlooking the city. The climb (or drive) was absolutely worth it—the panoramic view of Otaru stretched from the snow-tipped mountains in the distance to the sparkling waters of Ishikari Bay. The rooftops of the city looked like a patchwork quilt, and the horizon seemed endless. It was the kind of view that makes you linger a little longer, just to take it all in.

Later in the day, I explored the cliffs near Otaru’s coast. Jagged rock formations met the crashing waves of the Sea of Japan, and the dramatic contrast between dark cliffs and white winter foam was breathtaking. The salty air, the sound of waves, and the wind tugging at my coat created a raw, powerful moment of connection with nature.

Otaru showed me a side beyond its famous glass shops and canal boats—a side of deep spirituality, sweeping views, and rugged coastal beauty. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best memories come when you wander a little further.
