Wat Chaiwatthanaram or Wat Chaiwatthanaram is an ancient temple from the late Ayutthaya period in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. It is located in Ban Pom Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, on the banks of the Chao Phraya River on the west side outside the city island. Wat Chaiwatthanaram is considered another important place in Ayutthaya.

History of Wat Chaiwatthanaram

Wat Chaiwatthanaram was built in 2173 by King Prasat Thong. He ordered it to be built on the land of his original house to dedicate merit to his mother. However, His Royal Highness Prince Damrong Rajanubhab assumed that the temple was built as a memorial to the victory over the city of Lakhon by copying the design of Angkor Wat.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram is a royal temple where every king who succeeded him performed royal merit-making. Therefore, it has been renovated in every reign. It is the place where almost every member of the royal family is cremated. When King Borommakot passed away, he was cremated at this temple.
