Located north of the Phra Mongkhon Bophit Temple, it is an important temple within the Grand Palace, comparable to Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai.
During the reign of King Ramathibodi I (King U Thong), the royal palace was built here as a residence. Later, King Borommatrailokanat moved the palace further north and donated the original land to build a temple within the palace grounds. He ordered the construction of a Buddhist temple area to serve as a venue for important ceremonies. As a result, the temple has no resident monks. Later, during the reign of King Ramathibodi II, he commissioned the construction of two large chedis in 2035 to enshrine the ashes of his father, King Borommatrailokanat, and the second to enshrine the ashes of his elder brother, King Borommarachathirat III. Later, in 2042, he built a large viharn (ordination hall). In 2043, he cast a 16-meter-tall standing Buddha image covered in 286 chang (approximately 171 kilograms) of gold and enshrined it in the viharn, named Phra Si Sanphetchdayana. However, after the fall of Ayutthaya in 2310, all the gold was burned and stripped away. During the Rattanakosin period, King Rama I ordered that the damaged parts of this principal Buddha image be brought to Bangkok and enshrined in a large chedi. The chedi was named Chedi Sanphetchayayan. The third chedi, located to the west, was commissioned by King Borommarachathirat IV (King Nop Phuttaangkun), his son, to enshrine the royal ashes of King Ramathibodi II. These three chedis are in the Sri Lankan style, separated by a pavilion. They are believed to have been built during the reign of King Prasat Thong. There are traces of restoration during the reign of King Borommakot. During the reign of Field Marshal P. Phibunsongkhram, the chedi was restored to its present condition.
Admission is 10 baht for Thais and 80 baht for foreigners. Hours: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (last admission 6:00 PM).
