Mang Lang Church in Phu Yen, Vietnam

Location: An Thach commune, Tuy An district, Phu Yen province, about 35 km north of Tuy Hoa city.

History: Built in 1892 under the direction of French priest Joseph de La Cassagne (also known as Father Xuan), the construction took around 15 years. It is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Vietnam, over 130 years old.

Cultural & Religious Significance: Birthplace of Blessed Andrew of Phu Yen – the first Vietnamese martyr, beatified in 2000 by Pope John Paul II. The church also preserves a replica of the first printed Vietnamese national language book “Cathechismus in octo dies” (Eight-Day Sermon), published in 1651 by missionary Alexandre de Rhodes.

🎨 Architecture & Highlights

Gothic French Style: Features two symmetrical bell towers, pointed arch doors and windows, stained glass, and a central cross on the facade. The blue-gray tones and intricate carvings reflect both Western and local aesthetics.

Underground Grotto: Behind the church is a man-made hill housing a grotto that showcases artifacts, dioramas of Blessed Andrew’s life, and a display of the 1651 “Eight-Day Sermon.”

“Mang Lang” Wooden Table: A round table (1.5–1.7 m in diameter) made from the native mang lang tree, a relic from the area's history and the church’s name origin.
