The gold leafing ceremony on the Ko Teng pole is an important ritual during the Vegetarian Festival of Phuket people. It involves pinning and gluing gold onto the Ko Teng pole, which is a tall pole in front of the Chinese shrine. The gold leafing on this pole has a symbolic meaning, inviting the gods to reside at the shrine during the festival and asking for protection for those who participate in the ceremony.
The gold leafing on the Ko Teng pole also represents respect and faith. Villagers and participants will help each other to glut gold leaf onto the pole to enhance good fortune and prosperity. The Ko Teng pole will have a flag from the shrine attached to the top to indicate that the Vegetarian Festival has begun and to call the gods to join the ceremony.
This ceremony is usually held on the first day of the Vegetarian Festival and is considered one of the ceremonies that attracts a large number of devotees and tourists.
