Kathu Shrine

Aam Nai Tu Shrine, Kathu Shrine or called Nai Tu Shrine or Chai Tung Shrine is the first shrine that started the Vegetarian Festival of Phuket. It is an old and sacred shrine and is highly respected by the people of Phuket. It is said that after a Chinese opera troupe traveled from China to perform in Kathu, a performer in the troupe fell ill, causing the troupe to think that they had neglected to perform the Vegetarian Festival (Eat vegetarian) which they used to do every year in China. Therefore, they agreed to perform the Vegetarian Festival at the opera house. After the Vegetarian Festival at the opera house, all illnesses disappeared, surprising the people of Kathu. However, no one knew about this ceremony well. The villagers could only pay their respects and ask for forgiveness from the shrine ever since.
