Visit the Chaotian Palace to explore its rich history, beautiful architecture, and cultural significance. Don't miss the scenic views from the palace's elevated position, and the opportunity to learn about Nanjing's past through the exhibitions housed in the palace.

Located on Yeshan Mountain, within Shuiximen, Chaotiangong Subdistrict, Qinhuai District, Nanjing, Chaotian Palace is the highest-ranking, largest, and best-preserved ancient architectural complex in the Jiangnan region. The name Chaotian Palace was bestowed by Emperor Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang, meaning "worshiping the heavens" and "appearing before the emperor."
Yeshan, where Chaotian Palace is located, was the site of Yecheng, built by King Fuchai of Wu during the Spring and Autumn Period. It is one of the origins of Nanjing's main city. Since then, it has experienced various changes, serving as a temple, a Taoist temple, and a learning center. During the Ming Dynasty, Chaotian Palace served as a venue for practicing etiquette before imperial ceremonies and for officials' children to learn the etiquette of meeting the emperor before inheriting their titles. During the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty, the original site was rebuilt, transforming from a Taoist building from the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties into a Confucian Confucian Temple and the Jiangning Prefecture School (the former site of the Jiangning Prefecture School was later converted into the Nanjing Martial Temple).
After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the Nationalist government designated Nanjing's Chaotian Palace as the Nanjing Capital High Court. In 1956, Chaotian Palace was designated a Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Site, and in 1978, it was converted into the Nanjing Museum. It is now a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Site and a National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction.
