Wat Phra Thong, Phuket Province

Wat Phra Thong or Wat Phra Phut is a famous ancient temple in Phuket Province. Wat Phra Thong is located on the north side of Phuket Island, near Thep Krasattri Road. It is a good place to stop after getting off the plane at Phuket Airport or before boarding the plane, as it is only about 10 kilometers from Phuket Airport. The name “Wat Phra Phut” comes from the fact that this temple has a Buddha statue that only half of its body is exposed from the ground. In the year 1800, King Bodawpaya, the Burmese general, invaded Thalang. The Burmese soldiers tried to dig up Phra Phut to take it back, but when they started digging, they were stung by a swarm of wasps, so they had to give up.

In addition to Phra Phut as the temple’s sacred object, Wat Phra Thong also has the Wat Phra Thong Museum, which collects antiques and belongings of Phuket residents in the past, such as mining equipment and shoes from the Chinese in the past.
