Budget Europe: Prague on a Shoestring

Prague feels like it was dreamt up by a poet — Gothic spires, baroque domes, and the slow flow of the Vltava River under centuries-old bridges. Nicknamed “The City of a Hundred Spires,” it’s a place where history hums softly in every cobblestone.
✨ Why It’s Special (Especially Solo)
• Charles Bridge at Dawn – Empty, misty, and magical before the tourist rush.
• Old Town Square – The Astronomical Clock’s hourly show still charms, even after 600+ years.
• Prague Castle – A sprawling fortress with St. Vitus Cathedral rising at its heart.
• Hidden courtyards & cafés – Perfect for quiet moments of reflection.
📜 A Little Background
Prague has been a cultural and political crossroads for over a thousand years — from medieval Bohemia to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and through the Velvet Revolution that peacefully freed Czechoslovakia in 1989.
👣 My Solo Journey
I started before sunrise, the Charles Bridge wrapped in fog, statues looking like silent sentinels over the city. In Mala Strana, pastel buildings framed narrow alleys leading up to the castle district. From the ramparts, Prague unfolded below like a painting — red rooftops, church towers, and the glint of the river.
In the evening, I found a tiny jazz club down a side street, sipping hot mulled wine while the band played. The music echoed Prague’s soul — a mix of melancholy and romance.
🍺 Tip: Even if you don’t drink much, try a local pilsner in a traditional pub — it’s part of the city’s identity. And for a sweet bite, trdelník (chimney cake) is best enjoyed warm.
