Nestled among the rolling apple orchards and alpine valleys of Val di Non, Castel Thun is one of Trentino’s most captivating medieval castles, known for its perfectly preserved interiors and centuries of noble history.
Built in the mid-13th century, the castle was the ancestral home of the Thun family, one of the most influential aristocratic families in the Trentino region. Strategically perched on a hill overlooking the valley, Castel Thun combined defensive strength with the refined elegance of a noble residence.
🕍 Highlights to Explore:
Porta dei Leoni (Lions’ Gate): The grand entrance flanked by statues of lions, symbolizing strength and nobility.
The Bishop’s Room: A richly decorated chamber with 16th-century wood paneling, carved ceilings, and an imposing canopy bed — a masterpiece of Renaissance craftsmanship.
Armory and Courtyard: Exhibiting historical weapons, armor, and coats of arms from Trentino’s noble past.
Scenic Views: From the castle terraces, visitors can gaze upon the serene Non Valley, framed by the Brenta Dolomites.
Inside, the castle’s museums and exhibits offer a glimpse into noble life — from ornate furniture and portraits to manuscripts and heirlooms passed down through generations.
🕰️ Fun Fact: Despite its age, Castel Thun remained inhabited by the Thun family until the 20th century — making it one of the few castles in Trentino with a continuous lineage of noble residence.
✨ Best Time to Visit: April to October, when the surrounding orchards bloom and the valley glows in vibrant green and gold hues.
📍 Location: Vigo di Ton, Val di Non, Trentino-Alto Adige, Northern Italy
