Opening Hours : 0900 to 1700 hrs

The Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewa chhenbi Phodrang (which means "the palace of great happiness or bliss") one of the most beautiful Dzongs in Bhutan to date. It is idly located on a small plateay between the two biggest river of Bhutan – Pho Chu and Mochu.

Punakha Dzong was constructed by the Zhabdrung Ngewang Namgyel in 1637-38 and is the second largest and second oldest Dzong in Bhutan.

Once the administrative center and the seat of the Government of Bhutan until 1955 when the capital was moved to Thimphu, it is now the administrative centre of Punakha District in Punakha.

Make sure to check out the "Four Harmonious Friends" painting which is a prominent symbol in Bhutanese and Tibetan culture. It signifies unity, cooperation and interdependence even when differences exist.

Many of the Dzong's majestic structures are well preserved and it is certainly worth visiting once in your lifetime.
