🌟 Qingyuan: A Millennia-Old Reclusive City Amidst Mountains and Waters
📜 Past and Present of Lingnan's Gateway
Qingyuan, this ancient city nestled between the Beijiang River and Bijia Mountain, has been a crucial land and water route from Lingnan to Central China since ancient times. The Lingqu Canal dug during Qin Shi Huang's reign passed through here, connecting the Yangtze and Pearl River systems. Strolling through the old streets and alleys, one can still sense the lingering prosperity of its "Lingnan's Premier Prefecture" days during the Tang and Song dynasties.
🏨 Modern Seclusion at Baina Hotel
Staying at Baina Hotel in Shunying Times Square, I unexpectedly discovered it's a perfect vantage point where ancient and modern blend seamlessly. Drawing the curtains at dawn, the morning mist over Bijia Mountain contrasts beautifully with the forest of skyscrapers. The hotel's 27th-floor sky garden deserves special mention - sipping tea at dusk while watching the sunset paint the Beijiang River gold, the entire city resembles an overturned palette.
🏯 Tracing the Footsteps of Reclusive Luminaries
1️⃣ Luo Bingzhang's Former Residence
This late Qing dynasty minister's former home now hides deep in Fengcheng Old Street. The weathered wood carvings in the three-section courtyard still narrate the legend of its owner who "rose from humble origins in Qingyuan." The most fascinating feature is the ancient well in the backyard, said to be where Luo personally drew water to brew tea during homecomings.
2️⃣ Feilai Temple
This thousand-year-old temple clinging to Bijia Mountain's cliffs inspired Su Shi's verse "I'd gladly stay forever as a Lingnan man." After climbing 999 stone steps, the mountain bamboo shoot stew at the vegetarian restaurant is so exquisite it recalls Lu Yu's "best from mountain waters" praise in The Classic of Tea.
3️⃣ Beijiang River Night Cruise
Board at the pier opposite Baina Hotel. As the cruise ship passes under Qingyuan Bridge, neon reflections from both banks shatter the millennia-old moonlight. Crew members will point to the shore's arcade buildings - former warehouses of Conghua merchants filled with tea and silk destined for Guangzhou.
🍵 Unmissable Qingyuan Flavors
"Zhouxin Old Street" next to the hotel hides the most authentic Zhouxin congee. At 5 am, masters still simmer pork offal congee with ancestral recipes over firewood. Paired with spicy pickled water spinach, it's the breakfast ritual of old Qingyuan locals. The receptionist whispered that Wednesday's limited-edition mugwort glutinous rice cakes are a must-try!
In this city, modern hotels become keys to history, while every delicacy serves as a time-travel code. Next time, I'll explore Lianzhou's underground river - said to hold legends of Qin dynasty garrison soldiers.
