Rainbow Mountain⛰️ ‖ Also known as Vinicunca or the Mountain of Seven Colors (Rainbow Mountain). It is located in the Andes of the Cusco region, specifically in the Cusco department, along the route to Mount Ausangate, situated between the Kullipata Mountain, Quispicanchi Province, Pitumarca District, and Canchis Province. It is approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Cusco city or about 140 kilometers from Cusco.
Altitude: Approximately 5,200 meters
The colors of Rainbow Mountain are the result of geological processes and the combination of various minerals:
- Red: The vibrant red color is due to iron-rich minerals oxidizing.
- Green: The green hue comes from the oxidation of copper-containing minerals.
- Yellow: Sulfide-rich minerals and sandstone give rise to the yellow color.
- Purple: The purple areas are formed due to the presence of aluminum, iron, and manganese in the minerals.
- White: The white sections are covered by snow and glaciers, especially near the mountain's summit.
Over time, these different colored minerals, influenced by geological changes and erosion, have created the breathtaking "Rainbow Mountain."
The local descendants of the Incas believe that the colors of Rainbow Mountain are a gift from nature and a symbol of the divine.
