Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Germany’s Timeless Medieval Treasure

#cityplaybook

Stepping into Rothenburg ob der Tauber feels like walking straight into a fairy tale. With its perfectly preserved medieval walls, cobbled lanes, and half-timbered houses, this Bavarian gem is one of the most enchanting towns I’ve ever visited — a living museum that somehow still pulses with charm and authenticity.

I arrived just as the morning sun warmed the terracotta rooftops, and the first thing I did was climb the Town Hall Tower. From the top, you get a 360° view of the town’s red roofs, winding streets, and surrounding countryside — an unforgettable panorama. Then I strolled the city walls, which are almost entirely intact and offer a peaceful walk with postcard views at every turn.

Plönlein, the iconic forked street with its tilted yellow house and tower in the background, is even more magical in person. I also loved the Medieval Crime Museum — dark but fascinating, with stories that give real depth to the town’s past. For something sweet, I tried the local Schneeball (snowball) pastry — crisp, sugary, and delicious with coffee.

Best time to visit?

Late spring or early autumn for mild weather and fewer tourists

December is magical too — the Christmas market is one of Germany’s best, and the town becomes a glowing winter wonderland.

Getting there: Easy train or car journey from Nuremberg or Würzburg.

Tip: Stay overnight — the day-trippers leave by evening, and that’s when Rothenburg truly feels like it belongs to another era.

Location: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany
