Safranbolu, located on the southern shore of the Black Sea in central Turkey, is an ancient city listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. During the Ottoman Empire, it was an important commercial relay station, famous for "saffron" — a precious spice that not only gave the city its name but also witnessed the prosperity of the Silk Road. Walking into Safranbolu feels like traveling through time, with old wooden houses stacked along the hillside, and red-tiled roofs and white walls exuding strong Turkish charm.
The old town’s winding streets are paved with cobblestones, lined with small shops selling handicrafts, sweets, and saffron soap. The most famous buildings, the İzzet Mehmet Pasha Mosque and the Haci Ali Oğlu Mansion, showcase the lifestyle of Ottoman nobility. From the city’s viewpoint, the entire town’s red roofs sparkle under the sunlight, making it one of the most memorable scenes to capture.
✨ TIPS:
1️⃣ Stay a night in a traditional Ottoman-style guesthouse to experience life in an ancient home.
2️⃣ Try the local dessert "saffron pudding" and saffron tea, both uniquely fragrant.
3️⃣ The town has many slopes and stone paths, so wear comfortable shoes.
4️⃣ The softest and most atmospheric light for photos is in the early morning and at dusk.
