[East Gate Ancient Street] is a street with a long history, witnessing the changes of Sha County and carrying the urban memory of the locals. It is located on the east side of Sha County, Sanming City, along the edge of the Shaxi River, and faces the Qifeng Diecui Scenic Area across the river. East Gate Ancient Street is the oldest block in Sha County, and it still maintains the pattern of two roads and nine lanes. There are 2 provincial cultural relics protection units, 15 immovable cultural relics, and 31 historical buildings, including the largest and well-preserved Ming Dynasty Chenghuang Temple in the southeast coast and Baoyan Temple, which was built in the Tang Dynasty.
After more than two years of active protection and renovation, East Gate Ancient Street has regained its vitality. The renovated ancient street retains the ancient buildings, and at the same time introduces new elements full of Sha County characteristics, such as original handmade, popular tea drinks, trendy flower shops, etc., and various local snacks, such as board duck, charcoal boiled grass jelly, tofu balls, etc. The renovation of the ancient street not only focuses on "appearance", but also closely related to the lives of residents. The strong and weak power lines, rain and sewage pipe networks, tap water, etc. have been re-planned and designed to improve the quality of life of residents.
During the renovation of East Gate Ancient Street, the concept of "repairing the old as the old" was adhered to. According to the actual damage of the houses, three methods of "weaving", "repairing" and "facade renovation" were adopted to strive to maintain the original historical appearance to the greatest extent. The renovation of the ancient street not only improved the "appearance" of the block, but also injected new formats, such as culture, tourism, commerce, leisure and other multi-complex functions, and planned to introduce young well-known brands, Sha County's local specialty products, and tourism products for sale.
In addition, East Gate Ancient Street also pays attention to cultural display. Through the carefully built theme cultural display area, the past glory of Sha County is re-presented to tourists. For example, the "Humanities Shayi Talents" relief corridor records the outstanding representatives of Sha County from the Tang Dynasty to modern times, the "East Gate Historical Building Cultural Corridor" displays the section map silhouette of the classic buildings on the ancient street, and the Sha County Red Memory Cultural Wall reproduces the grand scene of the 1934 Sha County City Battle.
