I've always heard of the Dong Grand Song, but this is the first time I've heard of Bouyei Ba Yin, which is known as the 'sound of heaven', 'the unique flower of the Panjiang River', 'the unique sound in the world', and 'the artistic pearl on the bank of the Nanpanjiang River'. It is also a national intangible cultural heritage.
This time I had a deep experience in the Bouyei Ba Yin Hall in Xingyi, Guizhou. Bouyei Ba Yin, also known as Bouyei Eight Tones Sitting Singing, is a folk narrative art form passed down from generation to generation by the Bouyei people. It is mainly based on blowing and beating. The term 'eight tones' originally comes from the description of a ritual in the 'Zhou Rituals·Spring Official·Master' in the Western Zhou Dynasty, which refers to 'all spreading it with eight tones' during sacrifices, referring to eight kinds of musical instruments made of 'gold, stone, earth, leather, silk, wood, gourd, and bamboo'.
Today's Bouyei Ba Yin actually has more than eight kinds of musical instruments, as many as 16 kinds, including plucking, string pulling, percussion, and wind playing. They include the moon guitar, gourd guitar, ox horn hu, ox bone hu, bamboo tube hu, gourd hu, hook gong, small horse gong, bag gong, thorn drum, copper cymbal, bamboo drum, suona, bamboo flute, Le You and leaves.
The most unforgettable for me should be the thorn drum, the drum is inlaid with several rows of bamboo nails, looking like a hedgehog, it is one of the main instruments of Bouyei Ba Yin.
In the Bouyei Ba Yin Hall, you can also see many local handicrafts from Guizhou, such as Guizhou embroidery, tie-dyeing, Bouyei three-dimensional grass weaving... The beautiful night is a feast for the eyes.
