Hokkaido is enchanting in winter, and one of the most memorable sights I experienced was in Otaru—though it required a bit of effort, including a cable car ride. I took the ropeway up Mount Tengu, and at the summit, I was rewarded with a breathtaking view of Otaru city and the coastline extending into the Sea of Japan. It felt like standing above a snow-covered wonderland, where the sparkling city lights met the icy ocean horizon. It’s the kind of view that makes you pause and take a deep breath—absolutely worth the journey.
Back in Otaru’s shopping district, the vibe transformed into something warm and nostalgic. The streets were lined with historic buildings, glowing lanterns, and inviting glassware shops. At night, the reflections of the lights on the damp cobblestones created a cinematic atmosphere. I explored a few stores, each with its own unique charm, from intricate handblown glass to music boxes playing gentle tunes. Street vendors offered hot snacks, and I enjoyed a local seafood croquette to warm up as I strolled.
Later that evening, I reached Sapporo, where the day concluded with a stunning view of the Sapporo TV Tower, glowing in orange and white against the dark winter sky. The surrounding park was peaceful yet lit up with holiday decorations, and couples were capturing moments beneath the festive lights. The city lights felt vibrant but not overwhelming—just enough to remind you that you’re in the heart of Hokkaido.
From mountaintop vistas to charming town streets and a radiant cityscape, this day offered me three distinct yet equally magical sides of Hokkaido.
