Lawang Sewu is an ancient Dutch heritage building which was built in 1904. Originally this building was for the headquarters of the Dutch colonial railroad (tram) company or Nederlandsch Indishe Spoorweg Naatschappij (NIS). This three-storey building in art deco style (1850-1940) was the work of well-known Dutch architects, Prof. Jacob F Klinkhamer and BJ Queendag. Lawang Sewu is located on the east side of Tugu Muda Semarang, or at the corner of Jalan Pandanaran and Jalan Pemuda. Called Lawang Sewu (Thousand Doors), this is because the building has very many doors. In fact, there are less than a thousand doors. This building has many tall and wide windows, so people often think of it as a door.
