Located in Sendai City, the Tohoku University Museum (Natural History Museum of the Faculty of Science) is an academic facility where you can experience the history of the Earth and the evolution of life.
The museum houses approximately 1,200 exhibits, including full dinosaur skeletons, fossils of ancient organisms, and rock and mineral specimens, allowing visitors to learn about the Earth's changes over the past 2 billion years.
Notably, the fossils of "Utatsusaurus" and "Sendai Mizuhoku Whale," discovered in Minamisanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture, are valuable materials symbolizing the region's natural history.
The exhibition hall is a two-story cylindrical structure with an open central area, where full skeletons of Stegosaurus, Fukuiraptor, and Iwashi Whale are displayed in an impressive manner. Additionally, the outdoor area features exhibits such as living fossils like Metasequoia and petrified wood, allowing visitors to feel the breath of nature.
Access is convenient, with a 3-minute walk from Aobayama Station on the Sendai Subway Tozai Line or a 1-minute walk from the "Natural History Museum of the Faculty of Science" bus stop on the Sendai Loop Bus.
Admission is affordable at 150 yen for adults and 80 yen for elementary and junior high school students, making it a recommended spot for families and students. The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with closures on Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a holiday), year-end and New Year holidays, and during Obon.
Whether you're interested in Earth sciences or paleontology, or simply looking for an enjoyable experience for all ages, this museum is a must-visit destination during your trip to Sendai.
