[Miyagi] Akiu Shrine, Sendai City

#SummerCampaign

This shrine enshrines the god of victory and is known for attracting many professional athletes who come to pray for victory.
Founded over 1,200 years ago, it later became associated with Suwa faith, which worships the god of victory. Within the shrine grounds, banners bearing the words "God of Victory" flutter in the wind.
The shrine is home to a sacred stone known as the "Victory Stone" and a sacred tree associated with good fortune.
Traditional performing arts are offered in the Kagura Hall, where faith, history, and nature commemorate the passage of time in harmony.

It is said that Akiu Shrine was first established in 808, the third year of the Daido era (the early Heian period), when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro enshrined Kumano Shrine here.
During the Muromachi period, Taira Morifusa, an ancestor of the lord of Akiu Village who was exiled to Mogami, prayed to Suwa Taisha Shrine in Shinshu for the restoration of the mainland and the recapture of his castle. His prayers were answered, and the spirit of Suwa Okami was enshrined at Suwa Shrine. Since then, the shrine has been revered as the "god of war."

In 1601, the Sendai domain also began to revere the shrine, and under the patronage of the Date clan, the shrine was built.

In 1909, by imperial decree of Emperor Meiji, the five Akiu villages' Atago Shrine in Baba, Shinmeisha Shrine in Nagabukuro, Shinkawa Shrine and Hakusan Shrine in Shinkawa, Yu Shrine in Yumoto, and Hachiman Shrine and Hayama Shrine in Sakaino were enshrined together, and the shrine's name was changed from Suwa Shrine to Akiu Shrine, forming the Akiu Sosha.
