Knowing the Stories Behind Architecture Makes Traveling More Enjoyable

Late architect Yu Dongryong, a Korean-Japanese, had a deep love for Jeju Island and left several architectural works there. Exploring Jeju through the theme of his architectural designs can be a fascinating experience. (Yu Dongryong Art Museum / ⛪️ Ark Church / Podo Hotel / Sopungseok Museum)

One of the main purposes of my visit to 🍇 Podo Hotel this time was to listen to a guide about the architecture of Itami Jun (Yu Dongryong's Japanese name). Hearing about his architectural philosophy embedded throughout the hotel was truly impressive.

Even the boundary between his identity as a Japanese and Korean was utilized in his architectural style.

He emphasized harmony between architecture and nature, and his ✍️ designs, characterized by openness and closure, seem timelessly beautiful and enjoyable.

✅ The hotel uses a drawing of a crake bird created by the late artist Nam June Paik while he was bedridden due to a stroke. It is also recommended to explore Biotopia, which features many works by the late Nam June Paik.
