Jusangjeolli Cliff (주상절리대, Jusangjeolli Cliff) is a famous natural attraction on Jeju Island.
What is Columnar Jointing?
• Cause: When a volcano erupts, lava flows out and cools rapidly. Due to thermal contraction, cracks form in the lava, creating polygonal columnar rocks, such as quadrilateral or hexagonal shapes. This geological formation is called "columnar jointing."
• Features: The stone columns are neatly arranged, resembling a screen. Facing the coastline, the waves crashing against them create a magnificent view.
Visiting Tips/Precautions:
• It’s best to visit on a sunny day with calm seas, as the waves and lighting significantly affect the scenery and photography.
• Be cautious when approaching the cliff edge or the coastline, especially when the rocks are wet or waves are crashing. Wearing non-slip shoes is recommended for safety.
• Plan to spend at least an hour walking around, taking photos, and enjoying the coastal scenery. Don’t rush your visit.
• There are nearby cafes and souvenir shops to explore.
• If you don’t have a rental car, you can take a bus or other transportation to the Jungmun area and then walk or take a short ride to the site.
