Cangshan District is named after the salt warehouse in front of it. Anciently known as Tengshan, during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, salt warehouses were built at the northern foot of the mountain. The area became commonly known as Yancangqian, and Tengshan became commonly known as Cangqian Mountain, or simply Cangshan, hence the name of the district. The district is located in a typical estuary basin, covering approximately 142 square kilometers. The surface is rugged, with hills distributed in the central, northwest, and southeastern parts. From north to south, the hills are Wengzhu Mountain, Guidong Mountain, Miaofeng Mountain, Gaogai Mountain, Chengmen Mountain, and Qingliang Mountain.
