Founded in 1395 by King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, this palace is the main and largest of the five palaces of the Joseon Dynasty.
The name "Gyeongbokgung" means "the palace blessed by heaven".
During the Imjin War (1592), the palace was burned down and abandoned for more than 250 years before undergoing a major restoration in 1867.
The current restoration began in 1990 with a plan to restore the palace to its original state before the Japanese colonial era.
