Seoul|A Creative Transformation from 1970 to 2017: Turning a Highway into a Pedestrian Walkway

In 1970, a highway was constructed to connect Namdaemun and Malli-dong, facilitating easier transportation for merchants traveling between textile factories and markets as part of economic development efforts. However, in recent years, the aging bridge and heavy traffic raised safety concerns.

Originally slated for demolition, a brilliant idea emerged: converting the highway into a pedestrian walkway connecting Namdaemun to Hoehyeon. This project also reconnected 17 roads near Seoul Station that were previously divided by railway tracks, creating an aerial pathway.

Named "7017" to symbolize the connection between 1970 and 2017, this nearly one-kilometer-long walkway has become a winding "white dragon" near Seoul Station. Visitors can access 7017 via ramps or spiral staircases. The area is impressively green, with circular flower beds doubling as benches for pedestrians to rest.

From the bridge, you can enjoy views of cultural landmarks like Culture Station Seoul 284, Sungnyemun Gate, and Namdaemun Church. Strolling along the walkway is a pleasant experience. The bridge also features multiple white circular structures designed to house small shops and cafes, though they were closed during my visit. If you're in Seoul, this is definitely worth exploring.

📍Address: 432 Cheongpa-ro, Jung District, Seoul, South Korea
🚗 Seoul Station Exit 15, a three-minute walk to the bridge.
