🌸 Gyeongbokgung Palace Itinerary & Travel Tips

Itinerary suggestion:

— Morning (9:00–9:30 AM): Arrive Early

Arrive just before the opening ceremony to be ahead of the crowds and enjoy the palace grounds in peaceful morning light. You can rent a hanbok from nearby shops. Not only is the entry free if you wear a hanbok, but it makes for gorgeous photos! 📸

— 10:00 AM: Watch the Guard Changing Ceremony

Head to the main gate (Gwanghwamun) to catch the Changing of the Guard Ceremony. It’s held daily (except Tuesdays) at 10:00 AM & 2:00 PM.

Tip: Arrive 10–15 minutes early for the best viewing spot.

— 10:30–11:30 AM: Explore the Palace Grounds

Walk through the Heungnyemun Gate, Geunjeongjeon Hall (the throne hall), and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion (a serene pond-side building once used for royal banquets). Each area offers stunning photo opportunities framed by the majestic Bugaksan Mountain.

— 11:30 AM–12:00 PM: National Folk Museum of Korea

Located inside the palace grounds — perfect for a short, air-conditioned cultural break! Learn about Korean traditions and ancient life with interactive exhibits.

— 12:00–1:00 PM: Lunch in Bukchon or Insadong

Exit the palace and stroll to Bukchon Hanok Village (10 mins walk) or Insadong for traditional lunch options like bibimbap, samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), or tteokbokki from street stalls.



Travel Tips

- Closed on Tuesdays! Plan accordingly.
- Hanbok rental shops near Exit 4 or 5 of Gyeongbokgung Station – rentals start from ₩10,000–₩15,000 for 2 hours.
- Visit in spring (April–May) or autumn (October–November) for cherry blossoms or fall foliage.
- Bring a portable fan or water bottle in summer, there’s little shade inside the palace grounds.
- If you love night views, check if Gyeongbokgung Night Tours are open (usually seasonal).
