Time: 10:00, 13:00, 15:00 every day, 20 minutes, closed on Tuesdays
Location: Behind Gwanghwamun Gate, Gyeongbokgung Palace, in front of Heungnyemun Gate
During the Joseon Dynasty, the gatekeepers were responsible for guarding the main gates of the capital such as Dongdaemun (Heunginmun) and Namdaemun (Sungnyemun), as well as the main palace gates such as Gyeongbokgung Palace where the king lived. The gatekeepers will open and close Gwanghwamun and take turns on duty according to designated procedures. The gatekeeper system was first established in Korea in 1469, the first year of King Yejong of Joseon. Prior to that, the guards of the central army were responsible for guarding the palace. The current Changing of the Guards Ceremony is a reproduction of the original ceremony of the Changing of the Guards during the Joseon Dynasty, as well as the uniforms, weapons, and various ceremonial items of the soldiers who guarded the palace at that time.
