Visiting Potatso National Park (普达措国家公园) felt like stepping into a living painting. Located near Shangri-La in Yunnan, this park holds the honor of being the first national park in China, and it truly lives up to its reputation. The landscape is a breathtaking blend of highland meadows, mirror-like lakes, lush forests, and endless fields of wildflowers.
I spent a few hours wandering around the main highlights — Shudu Lake and Bita Lake — both offering serene landscapes that seemed untouched by time. Walking along the well-maintained boardwalks, I could smell the fresh pine scent in the air, hear birds calling in the distance, and even spot yaks grazing lazily by the water’s edge.
What I loved most was how peaceful everything felt. The altitude is high (around 3,500 meters), but the walkways make it easy for visitors of all ages to enjoy without needing a strenuous hike. It’s a perfect place for those who want to experience Shangri-La’s natural beauty without much effort.

Travel Tips

• Pace yourself: The altitude can cause shortness of breath; walk slowly and stay hydrated.

• Camera ready: Shudu Lake’s reflections and Bita Lake’s pristine waters are incredibly photogenic.

• Easy walking: Boardwalks make it accessible for families and elderly visitors.

• Best season: Visit between May and October when the flowers bloom and the weather is pleasant.

• Bring snacks and water: Food options inside the park are limited.

• Respect nature: Stick to the paths to protect the fragile ecosystem. Don’t feed the animals although a lot of tourists did that.

How to Get There

• Fly into Diqing Shangri-La Airport (迪庆香格里拉机场): The nearest airport to the park.

• Travel from Shangri-La Town:
• By shuttle bus: There are frequent park shuttle buses from Shangri-La town center (takes about 40 minutes).
• By private car: Hiring a driver is a convenient option if you prefer flexible timing.

• Park entry:
• Purchase the entrance ticket which includes a compulsory eco-bus ride that brings you around the main scenic spots inside the park.
• Walking paths around Shudu Lake and Bita Lake are clearly marked and easy to follow.
