Shaowu was established as a county during the Three Kingdoms period. Originally named Zhaowu County, it was renamed Shaowu County during the Western Jin Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, it was promoted to Shaowu Army, and during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was Shaowu Prefecture. As a military stronghold in northern Fujian, it has the reputation of Iron City.
The more famous scenic spots in Shaowu include Heping Ancient Town, Tiancheng Qixia, Yunling Mountain, and Jinkeng Red Tourism Area, all of which are 4A scenic spots. They feature both cultural history and natural scenery, but are some distance from the main urban area. The main attractions in the urban area include Fushan Forest Park, Xichun Mountain, the ancient city tower, and the musical fountain square. Baoci, Jiaozhangci, Youjiang Tofu, Fen Zheng Rou, and Braised Beef Brisket and other delicacies also have certain local characteristics. Shaowu is also known as Southern Wuyi, and is only an hour's drive from the Wuyi Mountain Scenic Area, so it can be visited as part of the Wuyi Mountain scenic area.
