Shiretoko Peninsula, located in the easternmost part of Hokkaido and Japan, is home to the stunning Shiretoko Five Lakes. During the summer, when bears are most active, trekking is only allowed with a guide. However, outside of this season, individual trekking is permitted. Since we visited in mid-July, we joined a guided trek.
The first photo was taken at the final wooden deck. From the deck, you can't see the beautiful lakes, so make sure to trek to fully enjoy the breathtaking views of all five lakes. Each lake offers its own unique and spectacular scenery.
How to get there: Renting a car is the easiest way to reach the area. The drive is so scenic that you won't feel bored.
Highlights: Shiretoko Five Lakes
Accommodation: Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel
Recommended Points: The thrill and anticipation of possibly spotting a brown bear. However, if a bear is sighted, all tours are immediately halted. Although I couldn't capture a photo of the fox because it was too quick, it was incredibly adorable.
Shopping Info: There is an H/H store available.
