After leaving Hongcun and Xidi, I suddenly grew tired of the refined "tourist attraction vibe." I wanted to find a place where people live their normal lives, where houses age and time leaves its marks. So, I came to Yuliang Dam in Shexian County.
💡 Most practical tips:
1. Navigation is key! Never navigate directly to "Yuliang Ancient Town," as it takes a longer route. Be sure to navigate to "Shexian Digital Rural Museum," park nearby, then go down a small path, and suddenly you’ll see the dam and ancient town.
2. Stroller warning: The ancient town is all cobblestone roads, which will make a baby stroller ride very bumpy. It’s recommended to use a baby carrier or let the child walk.
3. Best experience: Slow down, don’t rush through the sights. Walk along the main road by the river, observing the mix of modern and ancient buildings. Some collapsed houses even have "Ancient Building Protection" signs. That feeling of time and space overlapping is the most precious thing here.
🌟 Most unforgettable moment (photos 8 and 9): At Yuliang Dam, I witnessed the most primal shock of life—a large number of fish swimming upstream, gathering into a black, surging lifeline along the water’s edge. They have been repeating the same mission for thousands of years, while the ancient town on the shore has changed many times.
There are no tickets, no rush. You can wander freely, daydream, and truly feel the local customs and culture. This, perhaps, is the true meaning of travel.
