Welcome to Daisetsuzan National Park — Japan’s largest national park and one of its wildest. Located in central Hokkaido, this vast alpine wilderness is home to volcanic peaks, pristine forests, hot springs, and some of the most breathtaking hiking trails in the country.
Nicknamed “the roof of Hokkaido,” Daisetsuzan features towering mountains like Mount Asahi (Asahidake) and Mount Tokachi, drawing climbers and nature lovers year-round. In summer, vibrant alpine flowers paint the hillsides, while autumn brings a dazzling display of red and gold foliage — often the earliest fall colors in Japan.
Keep your eyes open for rare wildlife like Hokkaido deer, foxes, and even brown bears (observe from a distance!). After a long trek, unwind in one of the many natural onsen resorts, such as Sounkyo or Asahidake Onsen.
Daisetsuzan is more than just a scenic escape — it’s a chance to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in raw, untamed nature.
🚆 Accessible via train and bus from Asahikawa, with well-marked trails and mountain lodges for overnight stays.
