Once Upon a Tide: Sailing Through Singapore’s Story at the National Museum

#mytraveldiary Odyssey at the National Museum feels like stepping onto a time-travelling ship. Housed in the museum’s Glass Rotunda, it takes you on a spiral descent through Singapore’s history, from myths and mangroves to bustling ports, wartime struggles, independence and today’s skyline.
What makes it memorable is how interactive it is. At the start, you pick an animal companion with an RFID wristband—mine was a hornbill—that follows you through the journey, lighting up spots and triggering little surprises along the way. It’s such a small detail, but it makes the whole experience feel personal.
The projections and soundscapes are beautiful. Midway down, there’s a suspended LED globe that lights up with centuries of maritime routes, almost like watching Singapore’s place in the world unfold before your eyes. At the base, you walk past a digital waterfall that parts when you step closer, with ripples spreading across the floor under your feet.
The ending is my favourite. You release your animal companion into a digital well, and together with other visitors, the creatures gather under a giant mythical tree of life. For a few moments, everyone in the space feels connected—people, stories, and even nature.
It’s free for locals, and easy to pair with the Singapore History Gallery right after. Odyssey is more than an exhibition—it’s an experience that blends history, myth and technology in a way that feels both playful and moving.
