My wife and I spent the bulk of our first day here. If you like walking (and can take the heat) then you could easily spend 4 or more hours exploring like we did but it would also be easy enough to pop in, see the orchid gardens and leave.
We took the MRT and it lets off just across the street from the park. I highly recommend the learning Forest as there's a tree top canopy walk that's gorgeous. We loved the constant background noise of the cicadas. We also saw lots of very large (monitor?) lizards everywhere that kind of scared my wife at first but that we both quickly learned to love. There were signs for otters around but we didn't see any but we did see;
Small snakes
Squirrels
Weird small lizards (stinks I think they're called?)
Turtles
Lots of chickens!
The Ginger garden is also beautiful with a nice little waterfall that you can behind. We didn't actually bother with the orchid garden as we felt there were enough flowers in the rest of the park but it was a reasonable $15 for tourists if you want to go.
The park is extremely easy to navigate and has lots of free toilets (some are half outside which is cool). There are lots of free water filling stations, some of them even dispense cold water. There are also tons of vending machines selling very reasonably priced cold drinks. I'm mentioning this because you'll want to drink a lot of fluids!!!!
