On this trip, I visited the fairytale-like palace, Pena Palace (Palácio Nacional da Pena)! 🇵🇹🏰🌈
🛄 | A Dreamlike Palace on Sintra's Hill
About a 40-minute train ride from Lisbon—arriving at the small town of Sintra, colorful buildings peeked through the clouds atop the distant hill. That was Pena Palace, one of the most enchanting architectural wonders in Portugal. Built in the 19th century by Ferdinand II of Portugal on the ruins of a medieval monastery, Pena Palace is considered a masterpiece of Romantic architecture. From afar, its vibrant colors immediately catch the eye, as if it leapt out of a painting.
🌈 A Palace of Vibrant Colors
As you get closer to the palace, the harmony of colors, resembling a stack of toy blocks, is astonishing. The red tower, yellow walls, gray stone fortress, and blue sky come together to create a fairytale-like scene. The building features a unique blend of Gothic, Mudéjar, Renaissance, and Manueline styles, with intricate patterns, tile decorations, and statues showcasing the craftsmanship. Particularly striking is the Triton sculpture above the entrance, depicting the sea god supporting the palace, one of Pena Palace's most impressive details.
🏰 The Interior and Terrace Views
Inside the palace, the rooms are adorned with luxurious furniture, stained glass, and intricate tiles, preserving the traces of the era in every corner. Walking through the king and queen's bedrooms, dining room, and library, you can glimpse the opulent daily life of the 19th-century Portuguese royal family. Stepping out onto the terrace, you are greeted with a panoramic view of the Sintra Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. On cloudy days, the palace seems to float in the sky, while on clear days, the forest and sea stretch out dazzlingly into the distance.
🌿 Paths Between Clouds and Forests
Pena Palace is located within Sintra National Park, making the journey to the palace itself an adventure. The lush forest paths, stone steps, and moss-covered trees, with occasional glimpses of the palace towers, heightened the excitement. The air was filled with the scent of earth and trees, offering a tranquility completely different from the city.
