Yeongrangho, the jewel of Sokcho

It is one of the many lagoons on the east coast. A lagoon is a lake separated from the sea by a sandbar, and as freshwater flows in through a river, the salinity gradually decreases and it becomes a freshwater lake. Yeongrang Lake is also the only one that went through this process because Jangcheon Stream flowed in.

The name Yeongrang Lake comes from Yeongrang (永郎), one of the four Silla scholars. The four Silla scholars Yeongrang, Sulrang (述郎), Namrang (南郎), and Ansang (安詳) were Hwarangs during the reign of King Hyoso of Silla, and they traveled around Gangwon-do to train. According to the legend, Yeongrang, who was planning to attend a martial arts competition held in the capital city of Geumseong, arrived in Sokcho and was so captivated by the beautiful scenery of Yeongrang Lake that he forgot about the martial arts competition and stayed there. It is said that the lake came to be called Yeongrang Lake as this legend was passed down.

In spring, cherry blossoms bloom all around the lakeside path, presenting the most beautiful scenery of the year.
