🏺 “Glass & Brush: East Meets West at the Kitazawa Museum of Art”

#hellohalloween

Nestled on the shores of Lake Suwa in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, the Kitazawa Museum of Art was founded in 1983 by industrialist Toshio Kitazawa, and opened its doors officially to the public in the picturesque city of Suwa. The museum’s serene lakeside location provides a reflective setting for its unique focus on decorative glass art and modern Japanese painting.

Inside, the museum houses an outstanding collection of late 19th– and early 20th-century French Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass works—featuring key names such as Émile Gallé, the Daum Brothers and René Lalique—alongside a gallery of around 200 post-1960 Japanese paintings, creating a dialogue between Western craft and Japanese artistry. Visitors praise the museum for its elegant displays, intimate scale and the tranquil café overlooking the lake.

For your visit: the museum is located at 1-13-28 Kogandōri, Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture 392-0027. Opening hours are typically 9:00 a.m. to 18:00 from April to September, and 9:00 a.m. to 17:00 from October to March; last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Admission for adults is about ¥1,000, with reduced rates for junior high students and free for younger children. Plan to spend around 1–2 hours to enjoy the collection and café peacefully.
