Tongli is the perfect water town for those looking to avoid the massive crowds of other popular destinations like Zhouzhuang. I visited on a weekday, and it was incredibly serene. The town feels authentic, with locals going about their daily lives, which adds to its charm. Walking along the narrow streets and canals was wonderful, and the whole place is a pedestrian zone, so you can explore at your own pace. I highly recommend taking a 25-minute boat ride to see the town from a different perspective. It’s a very relaxing and pleasant way to spend a day.
Tips:
To truly experience the quiet atmosphere, try to arrive early in the morning before the day-trippers from nearby cities get there.
Bring comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking on stone-paved streets and bridges.
