#newyearnewtrip Nestled along Tonghua Street, right next to the bustling Linjiang Street Night Market / Tonghua Night Market, 老店頭台南意麵 is a time-honored noodle shop that has been serving up authentic Tainan-style pasta noodles (意麵) for generations. Open 24 hours, this humble eatery is a go-to spot for locals craving a comforting, no-frills bowl of Tainan noodles, whether in dry or soup form.
At first glance, the noodles may look plain and unassuming, but don’t be fooled—the soup version is hot, hearty, and deeply satisfying, pairing perfectly with their signature dumplings, which are generously stuffed with meat and black fungus for a juicy, flavorful bite.
The real standout, however, is their Black Sesame Pasta Noodle (黑芝麻意麵), a dry-style specialty that arrives at the table unmixed—just plain white noodles topped with a mountain of bean sprouts. The magic happens when you stir it with your chopsticks—the entire bowl turns a rich, deep black from the thick, nutty black sesame sauce. It’s a bold, aromatic dish with an intensely earthy sesame flavor, making for an interesting yet acquired taste. Diners can customize it with free condiments available at the table, adding an extra layer of spice or tang. Though not for everyone, many locals swear by it and return time and again.
To complete the meal, the shop also offers cold side dishes that are perfect for sharing—dried tofu, hard-boiled egg, and kelp, all served directly from the chiller. These are best paired with the hot noodles for a contrast in temperature and texture.
Despite its affordable prices, the portions here are generous and very filling, so if you’re planning to continue eating at the night market, it’s best to order conservatively. The shop has two floors, but unless it’s crowded, only the first floor is open for seating.
With its down-to-earth atmosphere and strong local following, 老店頭台南意麵 is the perfect spot to experience an authentic, traditional Tainan noodle meal, any time of the day—or night!
