Walking into the Seasonal Spirit of Duanwu at Yuanshan Water Shrine

Duanwu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is not only a day to commemorate Qu Yuan but also a seasonal occasion deeply connected to water. From dragon boat races to warding off diseases, the symbolism of water runs throughout the festival. If you're looking for a place in the city to connect with water while experiencing history and tranquility, the secluded Yuanshan Water Shrine at the foot of Yuanshan in Taipei is undoubtedly a meaningful destination for Duanwu.

Built during the Japanese colonial period, Yuanshan Water Shrine was originally dedicated to the goddess of water and agriculture, Suijin. Located at the rear of Yuanshan Park, the shrine is nestled amidst lush greenery, with winding stone steps and dense foliage. In the past, it served as one of Taipei's water sources, and today, it remains one of the rare, well-preserved Japanese shrine relics in the city.

Around Duanwu, as summer begins to bloom, you can start your journey from MRT Yuanshan Station, walking through the Flora Expo Park and shaded paths to reach the shrine in no time. Ascending the stone steps, you'll find wild grasses flourishing on both sides, with mugwort and calamus subtly visible, naturally bringing the seasonal spirit into view. The area is quiet, with only the sounds of cicadas and birds weaving through the shadows of trees and stone pillars.

Though the shrine has weathered the passage of time and some parts are damaged, the main hall, stone lanterns, and purification basin remain well-preserved, exuding a silent solemnity. Here, you can quietly place a five-yen coin, bow gently, and entrust your inner wishes to the water deity and the surrounding nature without uttering a word. Such a Duanwu celebration requires no grand ceremonies but carries an ancient and profound sense of blessing.

Bringing zongzi or sachets for a picnic here adds to the dialogue with nature. Sitting by the stone steps, feeling the breeze, and gazing from the old shrine relics towards the nearby Keelung River and the city skyline, you might feel as if you've traveled through time, sharing a moment of serene festivity with those from the past.

Yuanshan Water Shrine is not a popular tourist spot, but it is a place where one can find peace and reflection during the seasonal occasion. Here, Duanwu Festival transcends its traditional customs and lively celebrations, becoming a gentle ritual of connection with nature, history, and faith.
