The Taipei Zoo, located in Wenshan District, Taipei City, Taiwan, is one of the largest and most diverse zoos in Asia and one of Taiwan's most iconic public leisure and educational venues. Since its founding in 1914, the zoo has not only been dedicated to wildlife conservation and research, but also serves as a prime destination for residents and visitors to connect with nature and learn about ecology. Founded in Yuanshan in 1914 and relocated to Muzha, Wenshan District in 1986, the zoo has adopted the advanced "geoecological display method" instead of traditional cages. The exhibits here replicate the animals' native habitats, allowing them to live freely and allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the mysteries of different ecosystems.
The Taipei Zoo's vast grounds are divided into several themed areas based on geographical ecology, each with its own unique landscape and representative animals:
1. Popular Indoor Exhibits: A year-round attraction
Shin Kong Special Exhibition Hall (Giant Panda Hall): Undeniably home to the incredibly popular pandas, their adorable and carefree appearances are a constant source of photo opportunities. Koala House: These adorable ambassadors from Australia, lazily clinging to a eucalyptus tree, are a comforting sight.
Penguin House: King penguins and black-footed penguins are on display, allowing visitors to observe their comical movements as they move in groups and their agile diving.
Indoor Rainforest Hall (Pangolin Hall): Resembling the ecology of a Southeast Asian rainforest, visitors can not only view a variety of reptiles, amphibians, and birds, but also peer through glass windows to spot rare animals like pangolins and Malayan tapirs.
2. Outdoor Ecological Exhibition Area: Experience a transcontinental spectacle.
Taiwanese Fauna: Focusing on the conservation of Taiwan's native animals, the area showcases endemic or rare species such as the Formosan black bear, Formosan sika deer, leopard tigers, and Eurasian otters.
African Fauna: Featuring a quintessential African savannah landscape, visitors can witness the magnificent herds of large animals such as African elephants, giraffes, and white rhinos. Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone: In addition to the indoor enclosure, the outdoor area features tigers, Asian elephants, and other animals, creating a simulated jungle atmosphere.
Children's Zoo: A favorite for children! Get up close and personal with common rural animals like alpacas and miniature horses, and there's also a learning area, perfect for parent-child interaction.
The Taipei Zoo offers more than just viewing pleasure; it's also a vital educational venue. Children can participate in a variety of exciting activities, get up close and personal with animals, and learn about them.
