Luoyang Bridge, also known as Wan'an Bridge, is located at the junction of Licheng District and Hui'an County in Quanzhou. It spans the estuary of Luoyang River and was the land transportation channel for people from Guangdong and northern Fujian to go to the capital in ancient times.
The Luoyang Bridge was built under the supervision of Cai Xiang, the prefect of Quanzhou during the Northern Song Dynasty. At 834 meters long , it is China's oldest existing sea-crossing stone bridge. Its raft foundation and oyster - planting method were pioneering bridge-building techniques in China and even globally. In Quanzhou, the saying " standing like the East and West Pagodas, lying like the Luoyang Bridge " has been passed down from generation to generation, chronicling Quanzhou's glorious history of being built on the sea.
Originally 1,200 meters long and approximately 5 meters wide, the Luoyang Bridge boasts 46 piers, 500 railings , 28 stone lions , seven stone pavilions, and five stone pagodas . Its grand scale and exceptional craftsmanship make it a world-renowned, beam-type, harbor-style stone bridge and a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Site. You can visit the Cai Xiang Temple to admire the stone tablets, stone pagodas, and stone generals on the bridge.
